Audi launches 'Scrap Girl Cars' initiative in Auckland, inviting community to transform an electric Audi RS e-tron GT from pink to black, as part of its global campgn for progressive change.
The event at Westfield Newmarket is designed to challenge and dismantle traditional ger stereotypes associated with playtime toys, specifically toy cars. Audi encourages Kiwis of all gers to embrace a more forward-thinking future by using markers to turn the all-electric high-performance vehicle from stereotypical pink into a sleek black during June.
Audi New Zealand's Marketing Manager, Amy de Vries states that the initiative is grounded in their DNA of progress and commitment towards ger equality. It seems that as a society, we've continued perpetuating stereotypes about girls playing with 'fry' cars instead of realistic vehicles they may drive one day.
She further elaborates on how the brand understands the interest of women in performance cars but feels there's a gap from a young age due to unrealistic toy car options for girls. Our activation is an inspiring visual demonstration that everyone has the power to influence and shape progress, she affirms.
The event also ties into Audi's history with pioneering female figures like rally driver Michele Mouton, who was signed as the lead driver by the Audi quattro team in 1981 - a first for automotive brands. She achieved victory in her debut year at Rallye Sanremo and paved the way for more women in motorsport.
The brand also collaborated with Janelle Monae, an icon known for her significant role in advancing ger equality through her work across music, film, and television. Monae established Fem the Future, an organization that empowers women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics sectors which are traditionally male-dominated.
The Scrap Girl Cars initiative is located at Westfield Newmarket Shop S150 Level 1 from June 8th through June 28. All visitors will also be entered into a chance to win tickets to the Audi Ice Experience near Wanaka in August, where they can test drive the RS e-tron GT.
