Rebuilding Confidence After Breast Cancer: Navigating Emotions and Physical Changes
Breast cancer survivors have faced a journey filled with trials, tribulations, and emotions that are often too challenging to put into words. The impact of this experience is profound, affecting not just the physical body but also one's emotional well-being and self-esteem. From surgical scarring that alters the mirror reflection to loss of sensation and changes in skin texture or hr growth patterns, every treatment can bring its own set of challenges.
A breast cancer survivor has ured numerous hardships and transformations, including surgery scars, which permanently alter her appearance. Hormonal therapy may trigger premature menopause symptoms. Chemotherapy often results in hr loss, altered skin tone, nl changes, and even weight gn. All these physical modifications can make it extremely hard to regn self-confidence and rebuild confidence.
Being Informed of Options
When a breast cancer patient discusses treatment plans with their physician, reconstructive surgery is frequently included as part of the recommed course of action. Barbara Robey, a licensed clinical social worker and life coach at Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness at Piedmont, has dedicated her efforts to ensuring that women are aware of all avlable options – including choosing not to undergo reconstructive surgery.
Robey, who herself is a 15-year breast cancer survivor, decided agnst reconstructive surgery after undergoing a double mastectomy and now proudly wears a prosthesis which she clms was the right choice for her comfort. She asserts that selecting prosthetics has saved her considerable time and pn by avoiding another surgical procedure altogether.
“I believe every woman has a unique attachment to her breasts,” Robey states, adding, “For me, it was clear from the start that I didn’t want another surgery – and I’ve been pleased with my decision since.” Robey is passionate about helping cancer patients navigate their journeys. She draws strength from her experience and believes sharing her story can be a source of inspiration.
Taking Time to Seek Support
Nurse Practitioner Mirrin Reagan, who herself has battled breast cancer, offers support and guidance through patient interactions as she shares her firsthand knowledge with them. Reagan first learned about her breast cancer diagnosis after undergoing an MRI at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. She is a testament to the journey that leads survivors towards recovery.
Reagan emphasizes it's crucial for breast cancer survivors to reflect on their experiences positively and appreciate what they've overcome, instead of dwelling on physical changes. No matter how skilled a plastic surgeon may be, she reminds her patients that undergoing breast cancer does not mean returning to exactly how they looked before. This is why Reagan dedicates herself to being of resilience.
Reagan encourages patients to embrace life after overcoming such challenges:
“Cancer doesn’t have to be the of your story,” she states confidently.
Robey and Reagan are living proof that cancer survivors can lead fulfilling lives beyond their diagnosis. The Piedmont Healthcare community offers a range of free Cancer Wellness programs for individuals impacted by cancer, thanks to generous donors.
