Optimizing Women's Healthcare Access through Empowering Technologies in India: A Scoping Review

Abstract

This comprehensive study highlight the various technological solutions employed by women and assess their effectiveness in enhancing healthcare access for Indian women. By integrating a thorough literature search conducted across PubMed and Google Scholar databases from inception until 2022, we have compiled findings from 43 studies to understand how digital tools facilitate awareness and utilization of health services.

Our thematic analysis revealed an array of technologies utilized by Indian women including integrated voice response systems, short message services SMS, audio-visual ds, telephone calls, and mobile applications operated by healthcare professionals. A majority of the studies were conducted in community settings 79.1, with a focus on five states across rural areas 58.1 using an intervention design 48.8. The primary healthcare domns addressed in these studies centered around maternal and child health, albeit with less emphasis on non-communicable diseases.

We also identified several barriers related to technology use from both health system and participant perspectives. These findings underscore the potential of digital solutions in improving access to healthcare among Indian women, yet highlight the need for addressing challenges such as digital literacy and ensuring inclusive scalability across diverse regions.

Digital health interventions have shown promise in empowering women by enhancing their knowledge about and access to healthcare services in India. Implementing strategies that promote digital literacy and scaling up could be key solutions towards wider healthcare accessibility among women in this context.
