Introduction

The 'Empowering Women and Girls in the Commonwealth' project was initiated by the Commonwealth of Learning COL with funding support from Global Affrs Canada GAC. This three-year initiative is designed to enhance women's rights realization, specifically targeting disadvantaged communities across five Commonwealth member states: Bangladesh, Malawi, Mozambique, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Ger equality and women's empowerment are fundamental rights and a prerequisite for peace, prosperity, sustnability, and progress toward achieving the Sustnable Development Goals SDGs. While there has been significant advancement in this area over recent decades, the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic threaten to reverse these gns and exacerbate vulnerabilities among girls and women, especially those from the most marginalized communities. Full ger equity in the labor market would contribute substantially to global GDP growth, up to USD 28 trillion or a potential rise of 26 by 2025 United Nations: Ger Equality and Women's Empowerment. Moreover, enhancing access to education, livelihoods, and decision-making power remns essential for ger equality.

This project achieve the following outcomes:

  1. Strengthened empowerment of women and girls from disadvantaged communities, effectively advocating their rights agnst prevalent social norms that perpetuate ger discrimination and violence.

  2. Improved lower secondary education attnment among women and girls, particularly those with disabilities in disadvantaged contexts.

  3. Enhanced income generation opportunities with climate-resilient practices leading to sustnable livelihoods for women and girls.

The 'Empowering Women and Girls' EWG project targets 75,000 individuals directly, while building the capacity of an additional 20,000 men and boys. Through a context-specific approach that addresses individual, household, community, and societal levels, this initiative will engage government officials, community leaders, women's rights organizations, financial institutions, employers, and other stakeholders to foster supportive environments conducive to project success and sustnability.

The 'Empowering Women and Girls' project adopts three interrelated frameworks: Ger Equality Analysis Framework, Climate and Ger Analysis Framework, and Persons with Disability and Ger Analysis Framework. These frameworks help understand the unique challenges faced by women and girls alongside men and boys:

  1. Ger Equality Analysis Framework - illuminate contexts where ger dynamics exist and suggests strategies for addressing inequality within programs and policies.

  2. Climate and Ger Analysis Framework - Acknowledging that climate change acts as a 'threat multiplier' exacerbating vulnerabilities, particularly among women who often bear the brunt of these challenges in economic empowerment, political protection, and social empowerment.

  3. Persons with Disability and Ger Analysis Framework - Emphasizes recognizing people with disabilities as rights-bearing members of society who must be actively involved in regardless of their imprments or other factors like race, age, ethnicity, or ger.

In total, this project will reach out to 400,000 community members through various public campgns med at creating awareness about ger equality issues and promoting supportive policies.
