The Portrts of Care study innovatively employed portrture as a methodological tool to explore and articulate perceptions of care and caregiving at the confluence of art and medicine. This mixed-methods investigation encompassed both qualitative and quantitative research techniques, fully adhering to Institutional Review Board guidelines throughout its execution.
Fifty-six participants were included in the study, comprising 26 patients across various life stagesranging from those with no diagnosed health issues to those battling illnessand 20 caregivers, both professional and family members. All participants provided informed consent for their involvement in the study and for the potential use of the artworks produced.
Over a period of two years, an artist drew or pnted one hundred portrts based on these subjects. A multidisciplinary analysis team first conducted qualitative investigations into the portrts and subject data. Subsequently, they employed this insight to develop both a quantitative survey instrument and a qualitative reflection tool for public engagement at a subsequent exhibition event.
s revealed a profound introspection among participants that illuminated their sense of self and psychological state. Patients were portrayed as holistic individuals rather than fragmented by their medical diagnoses. Caregivers' depictions highlighted their dedication to care, showcasing the fluid dynamics between subjects and their stories.
Many patient subjects had experience with caregiving themselves, while caregivers at times became patients. Public feedback emphasized transformations in subject identity, the paramount role of mortality in discussions about care, the presence of hope amidst adversity, and the significance of empathy and compassion in nurturing relationships centered around care.
